My Joe the Plumber ad

I decided to make a commercial for the "I'm Joe the Plumber" contest at JohnMcCain.com. What do you think?

So did you send your ad in? All rhetoric aside though, if you look at the figures, Obama's tax plan would actually help Joe the Plumber. I know most of us cringe at the statement "spread the wealth" because it seems to go against our work ethics. We would cringe even more if we assume that all poor people are lazy. I have a dear friend who is conservative Republican, educated, but chose to stay home to raise her family and home school them. When her husband lost his job through no fault of his own, she applied for food stamps. There are those out there born to poor families with lots of children (perhaps because the single mom chose not to abort any of her babies), who didn't grow up in a cushy gated neighborhood with the best schools, and because of family circumstances could not afford to go to college. When they get a job, should they share the same tax burden as someone else in better financial circumstances? Isn't that why income tax was invented? So those who could afford it could pay a little more for services for all of us? There seems to be a disconnect when we are out there telling someone they can't kill their baby, but we don't want to spend an extra penny to help them raise that baby through our hard earned money.
Having said that, I've been reading the links that your site has brought me to, and I must compliment you on the respectful way you express your views. There are a lot of ugly words exchanged out there. I don't think they are helpful to unite our country. This is a very difficult election for me, since neither candidate represents my views in totality. Anyway, there's less than a week to go, and I thank you for giving me a forum to express my views!

There is a good article that responds to some of your thoughts at http://townhall.com/columnists/LauraHollis/2008/10/26/america_asks_for_a_king and I address some of it at my next post (http://hoteyre.blogspot.com/2008/10/yes-i-am-biased.html).

I did send the ad in but I haven't seen it at johnmccain.com yet.

You are right that it is unfair to generalize any group and call them lazy. I choose to stay home with my youngest child at the moment, and while I'm eligible for unemployment and I pay into the system through paycheck withholdings, I have too much pride to ask for it because I don't really need it and I'm not trying to find work at this moment. I think welfare, food stamps and unemployment are a good thing for those that need it, although too many people take advantage of the system. I believe in financial aid to go to college, but I don't believe everybody should go to college if they'd rather learn a trade instead. I seriously doubt if the reason income tax was invented is still the reason it is enforced because pure motives alway get diluted/convoluted over time. If we ask people not to abort, yes we should provide alternatives and care support, but we do! There are plenty of resources to help the pregnant mom and there are so many parents wanting to adopt that they are going outside of America.

Thanks for sharing your comments. They challenge me to think deeper.
