Still Undecided?

I have gone to some of these videos and found the speech in its context, so these snippets are taken out of context. You can do the same with McCain. I'm sure I could dig some up if I wanted to. Having said that, I see all political candidates being inconsistent. They do change their minds on issues, sometimes because of changing times and situations, sometimes for political gain. They all do that. So this video alone would not help me decide. Sorry.

my comments refer to the first video on flip flop.

In my mind, the right to life and the right to bear arms are inconsistent. Guns kill people.

Guns are a whole 'nuther issue. Guns are objects. People kill people. If there isn't a gun available, people find something to kill with if that's their intent. And the biblical definition of kill and murder are not the same.

Tell that to Columbine. Yes, there are other weapons, but guns are one of them. The technology of abortion, together with Roe v Wade, is a weapon, and it's available for doctors to use to kill. To overturn Roe v Wade is to take away the weapon, like taking away guns. Doctors can still perform abortions in the back alleys. People can still kill without guns.

It's too easy for bad people to get guns but most people (can I say everybody?) still have a conscience and believe murder is wrong. Most people who abort their unborn have seared their consciences and don't consider it murder. Having a sincere belief about something doesn't make it true. Government should not condone abortion by keeping abortion legal. Abortion has lost its stigma. So have a lot of sins. Murder by gun has not.

"Abortion has lost its stigma." That IS true! I have been confronted with that thought during this election, as it relates to society at large. We have to remember, though, that unbelievers' conscience is seared, and we exercise love and compassion to reach them with the gospel, not hit them over the head with signs in front of abortion clinics and calling them murderers to their face, or worse yet, bomb abortion clinics. Those tactics won't work with the abortion issue, or the gay issue, not to mention they are sinful response to sin.
And I see your argument about guns. In spite of that, I still think there should be some type of gun control so it's not so easy to get hold of guns to kill. Anyway, I wasn't really trying to debate guns, just point out why it's so hard for me to follow party lines.

True, true!

Yes, love must trump! We followers of Christ cannot hang our expectations and values around the heads of pre-believers. Jesus did not come to condemn, but to save. We Christians have allowed our consciences to be seared in many ways too, if we're honest. We must constantly confess and repent of our sins, removing the log from our eye before critiquing the splinter in another's. We should judge ourselves and let God judge others.

In this country there still exists a stigma against sex outside marriage, but it's slowly fading. Abortion wouldn't be such an issue of there was more social deterrent for promiscuity.

On our visit to South Africa three years ago, we learned from my relative that in Africa there is a stigma for having AIDS/HIV, but not for the sexual misbehaving that propagates it. Therefore, there is such "shame" of having HIV and if some someone dies, they die from a complication such as pneumonia and don't talk openly about the disease and it's prevention. Until the culture of multiple wives and mistresses, etc is changed, the spread of HIV will not be curtailed.

At least in America we are educated about HIV/AIDS. I do wish there was more shame regarding sex outside marriage and more positivity regarding sex within marriage.

Social stigma aside, real change comes from the power of the Holy Spirit through the preaching of the gospel. I pray the hopes we place in our government would not distract us from the hope we have in Jesus. I recommend John MacArthur's book Why Government Can't Save Us. And here's another article that has encouraged me and caused me to repent from spending so much time mulling over the elections. http://www.desiringgod.org/
